Data entry practice

Test speed and accuracy on mixed text with numbers.

Data entry is rarely just words or just numbers. It is sentences with quantities in them, capital letters, punctuation, and figures that have to be exactly right. This data entry typing test gives you a minute of that mix, then reports your speed and, just as importantly, your accuracy.

What the test contains

Each passage is natural, everyday text with numbers written into it: durations, counts and quantities. A capital letter starts every sentence, and commas and full stops sit where they would in a real note or record. The passages run on one after another as continuous text, so the test feels like working through a document rather than a list of drills.

The test lasts sixty seconds. The timer starts on your first keystroke, and the text keeps coming until time runs out.

Why accuracy comes first

In most typing, a small slip is easy to spot and harmless to fix. In data entry, a wrong digit can look completely plausible and travel a long way before anyone notices. That is why this page puts accuracy beside speed rather than below it: a fast result with low accuracy is not a good data entry result.

TypeMe's accuracy counts every keystroke you made, including mistakes you went back and corrected. Errors cannot be hidden by fixing them, which makes the figure a fair measure of how carefully you work.

Words per minute and keystrokes per hour

Many data entry roles talk about keystrokes per hour rather than words per minute. The two are related: one word is five characters, so net WPM multiplied by 300 gives the number of correct characters you would type in an hour at that pace. A result of 50 WPM works out to about 15,000 correct characters an hour. Treat the conversion as a guide only; formal keystroke tests are usually taken on a number pad and count keystrokes in their own way.

Practising for data entry work

Good data entry habits are mostly about attention, and they can be trained like speed.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the data entry typing test?

One minute. Your first keystroke starts the timer, and passages keep coming until the minute ends.

What accuracy should I aim for in data entry?

Higher than for everyday typing. TypeMe's speed benchmarks assume 95% accuracy or better, and for data entry it is worth aiming above that, because every error is a wrong value somewhere. Build accuracy first, then speed.

Does this test count keystrokes per hour?

No. It reports net words per minute, raw words per minute and accuracy. Multiply your net WPM by 300 for a rough count of correct characters per hour.

Can I make the data entry test longer?

Yes. Choose 120 seconds in the control bar for a two-minute run. The change applies to this page only and leaves your saved settings alone.
